Pol Roger's Sir Winston Churchill 2012 has just hit the market.

Since the creation of the cuvée (in 1975), whose name pays tribute to the famous former British Prime Minister, only 19 vintages have been produced, reflecting Pol Roger's wish to only produce this cuvée de prestige in the best years.

The Champagne House has now been producing this cuvée for 46 years and always with the characteristics that Churchill himself appreciated in a champagne: robustness, structure and maturity.

Robustness, structure and maturity, the key attributes of this cuvée

The cuvée’s blend is a closely guarded secret and varies from vintage to vintage, but the Champagne House has given us a clue: the Sir Winston Churchill 2012 is crafted exclusively from grapes originating from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay Grands Crus. The predominance of Pinot Noir provides structure and robustness, while the Chardonnay brings elegance, finesse and a bit of sass.

The 2012 vintage

2012 was a great vintage in the Champagne region - a typical Champagne winter and gorgeous sunshine over the summer which allowed the grapes, and particularly the Pinot Noirs, to obtain an excellent maturity, thereby providing great aromatic richness.

After 10 years spent in the cellars, this Sir Winston Churchill 2012 presents an old gold hue with grey tints, accompanied by fine bubbles that invite us to spend some time nosing the wine. Here we find aromas reminiscent of pastry along with vanilla and brioche notes that evolve into spice and candied fruit.

The wine is lively and straightforward on entry to the palate. The structure and roundness are in harmony with the flavours which include roasted almonds, acacia honey and gingerbread. This is a well-balanced wine with remarkable complexity and power.

As Winston Churchill used to say, "My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best".

This champagne is only produced in tiny volumes and is available in 75cl bottles as well as 3-litre numbered Jeroboams.
