Sparkling Tour + Grappers = a fascinating tour of the Champagne region!

As you know, at Grappers, we like to spoil you from time to time and you may recall that we ran a competition to win a Sparkling Tour experience at the end of summer.

This competition – a tour of the Champagne region - was won by Adèle who invited Enrique along to enjoy it with her. Let's take a look back over this tour together; who knows, perhaps you'll fancy doing something similar with us in the future!

The day kicked off at Reims train station. Adèle arrived from Paris, Enrique from Madrid... Having met Valentin from Sparkling Tour, we set off at a brisk pace for a day out in the Champagne region.

First stop in Écueil, at Champagne Louis Brochet

Here we learnt about all the stages in the crafting of a champagne, from the grapes’ arrival at the press to the wines’ ageing in the cellars, via their vinification in the vat house... the whole process was covered in this first stop. Valentin aims to have the visitor experience champagne and its terroir through a combination of education and good humour. You can sense his love for the Champagne region, and it is lovely to be accompanied by someone so passionate about his subject. The scene is set for the day!

On to Hautvillers to see the famous Abbey

The minivan took us through the vineyards where the colours were beginning to turn in this autumn season. It was a real spectacle, a veritable feast for the eyes! We stopped in front of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre in Hautvillers to learn some of the history of the Champagne region, i.e. Dom Pérignon and the birth of sparkling winemaking.

Lunch at the Restaurant Le Théâtre in Epernay

For lunch, we headed to Epernay, the capital of Champagne! Adèle and Enrique took advantage of this private lunch together to look back over their morning. And their review at mid-day could not have been more glowing. Let's leave them alone for a bit longer, so they can recharge their batteries ready for what lies ahead…

Early afternoon at Champagne Gisèle Devavry in Champillon

After lunch, we drove through the Epernay vineyards to Champillon in glorious sunshine, which augured well for the rest of the day’s experience... The tour of the Gisèle Devavry Champagne House started in the middle of the cobbled courtyard; it continued with a visit to the vat room and the cellar and was rounded off by a tasting of 2 champagnes in the tasting cellar in the appropriate atmosphere.

Last stop in Rilly-la-Montagne at Champagne Michel Fagot

The day ended in the heart of the Montagne de Reims at Champagne Michel Fagot where the visitors learnt about the family’s 120-year-old winegrowing history. Today the family manage the vines biodynamically and pay particular attention to their winemaking processes.

"We enjoyed this day with Valentin from Sparkling Tour courtesy of Grappers. The tour gave us a great overview of the Champagne region and champagne through its terroir, history and different production methods"
Champagne Lover

The return to Reims station marked the end of the tour and visits for Adele, Enrique and the rest of us. Yes, all good things must come to an end!

The day was incredibly interesting and rewarding for us all! Adèle and Enrique (re)discovered the Champagne region and its champagnes through the different histories and approaches taken at each Champagne House they visited. And it is this variety that impresses most…

"The diversity of the Champagne terroir and the visits to the 3 Champagne producers allowed us to taste the many different products that this region has to offer"
Champagne Lover

Stay tuned dear Champagne Lovers! There’re more experiences to be won soon, only on Grappers!
