Protect your wines from “lightstrike” with Oenoled
Crafting a champagne is a know-how in its own right, so let's not spoil it because of poor storage! Grappers has already talked about the ins and outs of storing champagne in an article here: the location, the position and the temperature of storage are important, but so is light! Yes, the wrong light could single-handedly damage your wines and cause them to suffer "lightstrike". But don't panic, Oenoled has the solution to ensure this never happens (again)!
What is “lightstrike”?
An irreversible phenomenon and one much less well known than cork taint, a “lightstrike” can affect wines and champagnes stored under unsuitable lighting. Certain wavelengths in the light spectrum are harmful to wine and alter its quality, particularly photosensitive molecules such as Riboflavin (vitamin B2).
Lightstrike can occur very quickly: in a few minutes for an opened wine left out in the sun, or in a few days to a few months for bottles that are not stored away from the light.
How can you recognise this phenomenon? If your champagne tastes of cauliflower or rubber, then there is a good chance you have lightstrike!
