After more than a year of lockdowns and curfews, there’s a new wind of freedom in the air. Travel has resumed, our desire to rediscover the wonderful world around us has been re-ignited, and our need for new experiences has never been greater.

But there is no need to fly half way around the world or even to cross a border to find these new experiences. Indeed, many people have already realised that we have many treasures sitting right under our noses; the Champagne region is packed with unusual places and experiences. Join me for this exploration of the Champagne region and you’ll be amazed at what you will find once you get off the beaten track...

In your own little bubble…

How would you like to sleep under the stars, but without the pesky mosquitoes? Well, you can, in a beautiful and tastefully-appointed transparent bubble, courtesy of "Nuit dans les Vignes". Although the bubble is (partially) transparent, it nevertheless provides its occupants with total privacy. You can partake in this extraordinary experience in Balnot-sur-Laignes, 4 km from Les Riceys, in the heart of a Pinot Noir vineyard belonging to the Gremillet Champagne House (Le Clos Rocher). It's the perfect place in which to share a glass of champagne with your loved one in the romantic evening twilight.

Whatever floats your boat…

You will see the Champagne region from a completely different angle when you take a trip along its waterways.

So why not sit back and enjoy a cruise onboard the Bateau d'Argile et d'Eau (Châlons-en-Champagne), an old barge dating from 1914? Owner Francis converted his barge into a bed and breakfast in 2006. It comes with five bedrooms so you can bring along your family or friends too! Imagine enjoying a champagne barbecue as you float slowly down the canal running alongside the River Marne on your very own barge...

Up, up and away…

Or you could take your loved one up in a hot air balloon that will give you both a view of the Champagne region as you've never seen it before? You can admire the Champagne landscapes from a unique vantage point, courtesy of Les Montgolfières Champenoises based in Prosnes, near Reims. They also have flights for children so this activity is clearly suitable for everyone!

An unusual drinking experience…

Treat yourself to a new and truly immersive experience at the Perching Bar built into the trees and the landscape in Verzy. Enjoy a glass of champagne as you bathe in the greenery. Definitely worth checking out (if you’re not afraid of heights)!

Ride like the wind…

Explore the region’s hills with the wind in your hair!  Planet Explora, a Chavot-Courcourt-based company organises treasure hunts that will have you whizzing around the Champagne region on a scooter. The treasure hunt, available on iPad, will also give you the chance to learn more about Epernay’s local heritage. It’s a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors reconnecting with yourself and your loved ones. But, above all, it allows you to discover the region and explore the magnificent Champagne villages!

A weekend in the trees…

Haven’t we all dreamt of living in a treehouse? Well, you can make this dream come true for a few nights in Les Cabanes du Lac on the shores of Lac du Der in Giffaumont-Champaubert.

At Les Cabanes du Lac you can bathe in nature and revert to your childhood while enjoying all the usual adult comforts. The location is a paradise for birdwatchers too as it is home to more than 400 species!
