Over 40’s Vs Chester Boughton Hall home

The over 40’s team finished their season off in fine style with a 26 run victory over Chester on Wednesday. On winning the toss Grappenhall elected to bat first and it wasn’t long before Paul Radage had retired on 30 off 22 balls, and with support from Mark Critchley (30 off 21 balls) and Mervyn Roberts 28 from 24 balls Grappenhall were setting Chester a target of 140 form 20 overs for victory. This game was significant for the introduction of former Lancashire and England batsman Neil Fairbrother for his competitive match since his retirement, unfortunately the comeback was short lived as he was caught and bowled for 6 runs. In reply Chester were restricted to 113 runs with a steady bowling performance from all the Grappenhall bowlers. The over 40’s after losing their first 2 games of the season then proceeded to remain unbeaten, however too many games were called off for the weather and they missed out on the play off spot – maybe next year !!

Grappenhall Cricket Club Match Reports

Weekend:-  August 16/17              CHESHIRE NEWS LETTER

1st Eleven

Thwarted again!

On Saturday Grappenhall 1st xi entertained Marple at Broad Lane. On loosing the toss, Marple elected to bat first on a day when the threat of rain was always likely to have an influence!

On a slow wicket Marple made a steady start and had reached the relatively good position of 47 before the fall of the second wicket. By this time both Grappenhall`s spinners, ( skipper Steve Titchard and Sam Baxter),  were operating in tandem, and wickets fell regularly with Titchard taking 6 for 29 off twelve economical overs while Baxter claimed 3 for 67 off 17 overs, finally bowling the opposition out for a modest total of 149. A feature of the innings was an excellent display by wicketkeeper Liam Parkinson who had 5 victims, 3 catches and 2 stumpings.

In response Grappenhall made a disastrous start, reaching 25 for 5 with the early order blown away by accurate seam bowling by Marple`s overseas Aussie Dave Bertline, taking all the wickets to fall. At this point with the skipper joined at the crease by Cameron Park they gradually rebuilt the innings and took the score to 83 for 5, Titcard on 33 n.o. and Park 21 n.o., before rain swept in, resulting in the eventual abandonment of the match. Grappenhall had to be content with just 7 points. With other matches also abondened it still leaves Grappenhall hanging onto 2nd place by one point with four games remaining in their quest to clinch promotion.

2nd Eleven

The seconds were away on Saturday to struggling Heaton Mersey hoping to maintain their push for promotion and after losing the toss were asked to bowl first on a good Mersey track. Whilst Guest and Hards were economical, wickets were hard to come by until the introduction of Ian Jackson playing his first second match in nearly 20 years at the club, 3 wickets in his first 8 balls completely changed the game and Mersey had slumped from 102 for 1 to 112 for 4, Grappenhall did not however capitalise on this and let the opposition post a commanding score of 242 for 6 from only 47 overs, with Jackson finishing with 3 for 44. In reply Grappenhall were soon in trouble when the in form Hartley was well caught for only 2 runs. Adam Roylance and Ian Jackson took the score to 72 before Roylance played a loose shot and was out for 28. Bradley Angel stayed with Jackson for a while with a useful 18, however Grappenhall were always behind the required rate and when Jackson was stumped for 55 and Bennison LBW for a duck and with the rain falling an abandoned game was looking favourite. It was then that Grappenhall took the game to Mersey with Neil Titchard and Sam Guest sharing a partnership of 51 of 5 overs before play was halted to the heavy rain with only 58 runs needed off 14 overs. Heaton Mersey were reluctant to take the field again until enough overs had been lost to put the pressure back on Grappenhall, and when play was resumed only 10 over were left, with the loss of Guest and Higham and light getting progressively worse a draw was agreed with Grappenhall on 198 for 8 leaving Neil Titchard on 47 not out (from 31 balls) and 10 points awarded to Grappenhall.
